AIA shares soar on their trading debut in Hong Kong

Shares in the Asian unit of troubled US insurer AIG soared on their trading debut, after a monster initial public offering that could become the world's second-largest this year. AIA shares opened 22.05 Hong Kong US dollars (2.84 US US dollars), a 12 percent rise over their IPO price of 19.68 Hong Kong US dollars, underscoring heavy investor interest in the pan-Asian insurer. The strong start follows a share sale that has so far raised 17.8 billion US US dollars and could still top 20 billion US US dollars if AIA exercises certain options -- placing the sale just behind Agricultural Bank of China's 22.1 billion US dollar IPO in July. Advertisement: Story continues below AIA's parent had moved to list its Asian unit as part of a plan to repay US taxpayers after a government bailout in 2008. The US insurer was forced to look at publicly floating AIA in Hong Kong after the collapse in June of a proposed 35.5-billion US dollar sale to British insurer Prudential. "This is a new beginning for AIA," Mark Tucker, the company's chief executive, told reporters at a listing ceremony in Hong Kong on Friday. "Our aim is to make sure we are the leading insurance company in Asia." Major Rosetta Stone English institutional investors, including the Kuwaiti sovereign wealth fund and several Hong Kong tycoons, snapped up AIA shares. Two girlfriends of Hong Kong tycoon Joseph Lau bought a whopping 11.2 billion Hong Kong US dollars worth of AIA -- half the amount of shares set aside for individual investors, the English-language Standard newspaper reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources. Lau, chairman of property developer Chinese Estates Holdings, denied through a spokesperson that the purchases were made on his behalf, the paper said. Agricultural Bank of China's IPO exceeded the previous world record set by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which raised 21.9 billion US dollars in 2006. Some observers have said AIA is a good bet, pointing to its reach across 15 Asian countries and the company's healthy balance sheet. The insurer booked a net profit of 1.75 billion US US dollars in 2009. But others are less convinced of AIA's growth potential, noting that it has lost market share in some countries despite being a well-known brand. "Investors are in Asia for growth. Today?s AIA unfortunately doesn?t measure up too well," Patricia Cheng, analyst at Hong Kong brokerage CLSA, wrote in a report this month. AIA's "influence has been declining across the board. It?s already lost the top positions in China (among foreign operations), Hong Kong and Singapore."

Thursday morning in Nanterre, a few kilometres west of the French capital's historic heart. It is sunny but jaw-grindingly cold, smokers puffing hurriedly outside office blocks, walkers hunched against the breeze. On the horizon Paris's skyscrapers sparkle like modern icebergs. On the Rue Des Suisses in the suburb's older, residential fringe looms the headquarters of the French National Front, a multi-storey concrete block guarded by a clutch of London-style security cameras and electronic gates. Inside the compound, an enormous, garish rendition of the Gallic rooster, unofficial national symbol of the French republic, stands guard. The two-metre fibreglass monster, it turns out, is a recent tongue-in-cheek acquisition, lugged back from an agricultural fair by Marine Le Pen, the ultra-nationalist party's leader. In a second-floor office she discreetly pushes a packet of cigarettes under a pile of papers before stepping out from her desk. She shakes hands, offers coffee and talks eloquently for more than an hour, her eyes drawn with hypnotic regularity to the fags at her elbow. Advertisement: Story continues below Le Pen is as striking in real life as she is telegenic. Tall, blonde and blue-eyed, she has the natural, long stride that smacks of confidence. Her voice, deep and tinged with the grate of tobacco, is modulated even when defensive. This morning, with an extraordinary couple of polls just out, Madame Le Pen exudes a palpable confidence. At the helm of the party for just three months, she has had a meteoric rise in the popularity stakes, eclipsing both the President, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Socialist leader, Martine Aubry. The polls, shocking the French themselves, now regularly predict that she could become a third force in the presidential elections next year. The most recent, published on Tuesday, suggests she would Rosetta Stone have wrested 24 per cent of the first round vote, with Aubry on 23 per cent and Sarkozy trailing on 21 per cent. An unprecedented 40 per cent of the French people now believe that Le Pen is well placed to repeat, or better, her father Jean-Marie Le Pen's 2002 upset when he knocked the socialist candidate, Lionel Jospin, out in the first round, only to lose later to Jacques Chirac. But Madame Le Pen, four decades younger than the reviled, former paratrooper and neo-fascist - and perhaps as many times more ambitious - is not content with merely being a spoiler candidate. She has worked strategically to ''de-demonise'' the party, rejecting the ''loony extreme right'' (her own words) as well as many of Le Pen snr's more loathsome utterances, from his dismissal of Hitler's genocide of the Jews as a ''detail of history'' to his hatred of homosexuals. According to Le Pen, political choice in France now is not between the old left and right but between globalist and patriot, those who would leave markets to ''the law of the jungle'' and those, like her, who want to put the brakes on the ''ultra-capitalist models''. Hers is a melange, not entirely coherent, of populist ideas packaged with alarming eloquence and education, rather than the bigoted ignorance of old. Unabashedly anti-big-business and anti-big-banks, she insists she supports free trade but with ''limits''. She is gleeful in spruiking a need for the French state to revive its sovereignty in a globalised world and is furiously anti-single-currency (and therefore implicitly anti-Europe). A passionate opponent of the privatisation of public utilities and the French social security system, she has also identified the desire for identity and a return to old values in an increasingly volatile globalised world. A trial of dressing all the inmates in a jail in the United States in pink overalls led to a huge decrease in violence and antisocial behaviour. The hilarious sight of someone in pink wanting to do you a serious mischief led to a rethink on many occasions. There's something about the colour. My (partial) solution is for teams of pink-clad kiddies spending many weekends scrubbing this mindless scrawl off our public and private surfaces. Oh, the humiliation! But her claim that as a Greens MP in the Legislative Council, she is focusing on delivering solid results for all who voted Green or share her values shows she is still in the political kindergarten. Elected politicians are there to represent everyone in their electorate and to work for the benefit of all people. That is enough dead Australians to fill the Sydney Football Stadium every decade. There is nothing funny, cool or interesting about smoking. These bankers for the poorest need to give their clients a hand up to help them start up and grow small businesses, not line the pockets of their employees and owners. Amid the loan sharks, the risk is that the baby will be thrown out with the bathwater. Leading donors to microfinance organisations like the Gates Foundation and the Rosetta Stone Spanish (Spain) Scandinavian countries have now tied their support to performance measurement to ensure the microcredits are benefiting the poorest people. The Australian government should increase its support to those microfinance organisations that can demonstrate their benefit to the poorest people. At present less than 1 per cent of Aus AID's budget is spent on microfinance programs. This should be increased to fund organisations and measure their performance in helping the poorest. The benchmark for microfinance shouldn't be its profitability but its impact on the lives of its clients and their families. As Carney is a repeat offender - a previously cancelled licence for drink driving - and a P-plate licence holder with a zero blood-alcohol limit, it would appear that the ability to chase a piece of inflated leather around an oval makes the RTA advertising pretty meaningless, if the sentence imposed on him is any indication.

Iran TV airs stoning woman's 'confession'

Iran's English-language Press TV on Friday aired footage of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a woman sentenced to death by stoning, re-enacting what it said was the murder of her husband. The broadcast came a day after reports from Germany that she had been released, with the Iranian authorities on Friday saying Mohammadi Ashtiani was still in custody and mocking Western talk of her release. "The defendant's case and judicial situation have not changed and she is still in Tabriz prison. Any news of her release is a sheer lie," Tabriz prosecutor Mousa Khalilollahi told the official IRNA news agency. Advertisement: Story continues below "Every once in a while foreign media give this case massive coverage for political aims." The Press TV report, which included interviews with Mohammadi Ashtiani, her son Sajjad and lawyer Javid Houtan Kian who are also both in jail, did not give new information about the case which has sparked an international outcry. But it accused Germany-based Iranian anti-stoning activist Mina Ahadi of seeking to politicise the case in the Western media with the aim of undermining the Islamic republic. A German-based campaign group said late on Thursday that Mohammadi Ashtiani had been released along with her son and lawyer after photographs of her at her home first appeared in the media. The still photographs were taken from the television reconstruction. Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was sentenced to death by two different courts in the northwestern city of Tabriz in separate trials in 2006. Her sentence to hang for her involvement in the murder of her husband was commuted to a 10-year jail term by an appeals court in 2007. But a second death sentence by stoning on charges of adultery levelled over several relationships, notably with the man convicted of her Rosetta Stone Softwarehusband's murder, was upheld by another appeals court the same year. The "reconstruction" aired on Friday showed Mohammadi Ashtiani repeating details of her husband's murder -- as previously described by Iranian officials -- in her home in the small town of Oskou in northwest Iran. It was the third time she had been paraded on Iranian television, but unlike previous times she appeared in a headscarf and coat instead of the head-to-toe black chador and spoke in fluent Farsi instead of the Azeri spoken in her home province of East Azarbaijan. The report also showed pictures of two German journalists jailed since October along with Mohammadi Ashtiani's son and lawyer after reportedly conducting an interview with Sajjad. Before the broadcast, the English-language satellite channel said the programme "will shed light on the highways and byways of the murder." Faced with an international campaign for Mohammadi Ashtiani's release, Iran has sought to shift the focus from adultery charges to her involvement in murder. Amnesty International condemned the broadcast before it was aired. The London-based rights group said "international standards for fair trial guarantee the right not to be forced to incriminate oneself or to confess guilt." "It appears that the Iranian authorities are using the Iranian media as a tool to portray her as a dangerous criminal who deserves to be executed," Amnesty said. In an earlier televised interview in August, a woman said to be Mohammadi Ashtiani admitted a man with whom she was acquainted had offered to kill her husband and that she let him carry out the crime. And in footage aired in September, the woman denied that she was lashed in prison and tortured. Mohammadi Ashtiani's current lawyer, Javid Houtan Kian, was arrested in Tabriz in September along with the two Germans interviewing her son. The pair, who entered Iran on tourist visas, worked for Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Mohammadi Ashtiani's first lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaie, fled Iran for Norway last July, when Tehran issued a warrant for his arrest.

Wednesday TV: Nightmares and Dreamscapes

Nightmares and Dreams capes Go!, 10.30pm Stephen King's numerous books, films and TV spin-offs are usually aligned with the fright and gore genres, even though his best work is more akin to speculative science fiction, where pointy-head science takes a back seat to big-ticket philosophicalmusings. Based on a King short story from 1986, The End of the Whole Mess is a rumination on crime, violence and the doctrine of original sin. Advertisement: Story continues below It takes the form of a video diary in which a filmmaker (Ron Livingstone) remembers his child-prodigy brother (Henry Thomas).From an early age, Robert displayed signs of mad genius, later becoming obsessed with humankind's self-destructive urges, which leads him to discover a potion that can reduce aggression. Naturally, there's a caveat to this experiment, which impliesthat nature has equipped humankind with both greatness and baseness. This US series was filmed in Melbourne (and has previously airedon pay TV), which explains the many familiar faces in supportingroles (Rebecca Gibney, Nicholas Bell, among others) and locations. Getting On ABC1, 8.35pm This is funny and smart. Really smart. Not in a tricky,brainy-plotted Lost kind of way but in the manner of a show whosegenuinely inventive script, cracking dialogue and imaginativecharacters transcend all the conventional props of scripted dramas.Funny, too, in a darkly pessimistic vein. Co-written by the threemain actors - lacerating British comedienne Jo Brand, Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It) and Vicki Pepperdine (a study insuperciliousness to match Rosetta Stone Robyn Butler's excruciatingpassive-aggressive turn in The Librarians), it riffs off the simpleidea of a bunch of doctors and nurses emasculated by nanny-statebureaucracy, terminal boredom and brazen indifference for theirmostly hopeless patients. The language, coupled with its bleak view of an institution that TV generally treats with reverence and sentiment, makes this a show that won't appeal to all. For everyone else, be quick: tonight isthe second of only three episodes. Shrink Rap ABC2, 9.30pm Dr Pamela Connolly's interview series usually straddles thecomfort-discomfort zone, except for tonight, when it plungesheadlong into the latter. The doctor lets loose on a barelyrecognisable Carrie Fisher, reminding the actress, author, bipolarsufferer, substance-abuser and all-round Hollywood casualty of herf lamboyantly troubled life. At times addled and barely coherent, Fisher wheels out a few of her much-quoted quips ("bad reality, good anecdote") but the painrests squarely with Connolly, who several times fails to explain,for the benefit of viewers, who Fisher is talking about. This makes the discussion about as exciting and engaging as a flip through the phone book. Upon hearing one of the many bizarre twists of Fisher's endlessly kooky life, she even has the gall to ask, "Are you saying that this was a very funny spin on what actually happened, or that these things truly occurred?" To me, at least, it doesn't look like Fisher is making any of it up. The Rat Pack ABC2, 8pm Inspector Rex's place as TV's favourite canine is under threat.Meet Charlie, a nine-year-old Jack Russell whose favourite pastimeis hunting down rats and snapping their necks in his jaw. A pair of London brothers is reviving the bygone practice of deploying aterrier to deal with the city's rising rat population. With tonguefirmly in cheek and zero pity for vermin, this squeamish, throwaway show follows the knockabout lads on their rounds.

That will happen and probably sooner than we think

True broadband internet will let us reliably make telephone calls (VoIP) and watch TV (TVoIP) on the net. It's all digital, which means it's all about bandwidth. Forget ADSL - even the much-vaunted ADSL2 is not truly high-speed broadband in comparison. Broadband is best achieved with a fibre optic network, which will reach most Australian homes by 15. Within homes, a combination of structured multipurpose cabling and wireless will keep us connected - everywhere, all the time. A lot has happened in years. But the information millennium has barely begun. The technological changes we are witnessing are just the beginning - anybody under 30 today will see changes on this planet our grandparents could not even dream of. Over the next generation we will see the interconnection of all devices at bandwidths incomprehensible today. We will see the marriage of carbon and silicon, the merging of computers and organic life. Fancy a terabyte of data at the base of your brain? How humankind adapts to these changes will determine the fate of our species. The past years are not even a dress rehearsal. A good rule of thumb is - if you can imagine it, it will happen. The only question is: when? Five essentials Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with inventing the web, says he's looking forward to the day when his daughter finds a rolled-up pixel by pixel colour screen in her cereal packet Rosetta Stone , with a magnetic back so it sticks to the fridge. That will happen and probably sooner than we think. Today we rely on technology to stay in touch and to do everyday things in an entirely different way from how we did them just a decade ago. Consider the following technologies and how they have affected your life. Mobile phones. Truly the communications phenomenon of the decade. There are now nearly as many mobile phones as people in Australia. How did we ever stay in touch before? Text messaging is even changing the grammatical structure of the language. Digital cameras. Film is all but dead. Our photo albums are in our computers - or our mobile phones. But will we be able to show our grandkids? Electronic images are more fleeting than those on paper. Email. If you don't have an email address in the information millennium, you are a non-person. Email and instant messaging is how the world stays in touch. It's also the preferred vehicle for viruses, spam and flaming (organised electronic abuse). Pay TV. OK, not a necessity, but it didn't exist in Australia years ago, and it's where the world is headed. But pay TV as we know it today is a transitionary technology - years from now, it will be delivered via the internet. Online banking and shopping. The banks aren't closing branches just to save money. The whole nature of banking has changed, thanks to the internet. The net is a giant shopping mall, where you can buy and sell anything. Amazon and eBay have truly changed the world of commerce.

Technology is not so advanced that protection for our authors can end

Many of us love reading books. Some are published authors. A very few write so well, their books are read by generations. Presently, I am addicted (again) to Jane Eyre. I still have not recovered from the shattering end to Seven Little Australians. And every time I open the first page of Margaret Fulton's Encyclopedia of Food and Cookery, there is my mother's written dedication to me. This world of books - this lazy Sunday afternoon ''turning the pages'' world - is not that portrayed by Guy Rundle in ''Book import laws are madness based on delusion'' (The Sunday Age, 13). In his world, technology has taken over how we read. There is no publisher. We are all online, using our Kindles, downloading some text, subscribing to Crikey, and blogging our thoughts. Book import laws, in this environment, are seen to be anachronistic and meaningless. This virtual world, this second life, is not the real world. And it may never be. Most of us dip in and out of technology. We read a book, we blog, we subscribe to Crikey. Who is to say when, or how, this may change? GPS devices have not become a definitive replacement for hard copy street directories. Both are usually kept in the car. So too, our future reading experiences may well involve a blend of ''back to basics'' and technology. Advertisement: Story continues below The Productivity Commission wants parallel import restrictions (PIRs) repealed so that Australians can pay less for books. The industry is to be given three years' notice of this change, financial assistance for Australian writing, and publishing is to be reviewed and the ongoing impact monitored Canada Goose parka . This recommendation has little to do with future technology. Authors need publishers to turn their manuscripts into widely distributed and successfully promoted books. Authors license their rights to publishers in exchange for royalty payments. Copyright law is territorial. These rights deals are therefore sliced and diced into different territories and market segments. Some overseas publishers prefer global deals, others accept distribution into some markets (say US and Britain) but not others (say Australia). PIRs, found in the Copyright Act, give the grunt to copyright protection. They enable the publishing industry to prevent the importation of some books, subject to limitations. Authors worry that if PIRs are repealed, they will have to enter global deals with larger, overseas players, and Australian cultural relevance will be lost. Authors will need to write homogeneously for a global - read American - market. ''Nappies'' will become ''diapers'', ''mum'' will become ''mom'' and so on. This will lead to a return to ''old colonial logic'' (Tim Winton), and the likely reduction of editorial staff to ''marketers and publicists for Paris Hilton'' (Peter Carey). Australia is a small player in a global distribution market. If book import laws in Australia are ''madness'', the other members of the asylum include the US, Britain and Canada. PIRs might well be abolished in Australia but remain in these other big English language markets. The risk identified by authors is that containers of leftover books produced for the overseas market (remainders) will flood into Australia. Authors usually give up their royalty rights to remainders, because they don't expect them to turn up on home soil. Yet, without the market power of our overseas counterparts, Australian authors fear they will be unable to negotiate a better deal. So far, there has been little analysis of how the practical value of Australian intellectual property rights might be impacted by the abolition of PIRs, vis-a-vis those larger markets that retain them. The consciousness-raising tone of this debate is derived from a range of complex forces. Lowering the price of books is important, as is the impact of removing Australian PIRs in a global economy.

Court India and spurn China's advances

Matt Wade highlighted a serious foreign policy failure by successive Australian governments ("We must not squander Indian links", July 14): why China and not India? Australians have a right to ask why, over the past two decades, our politicians have fostered such close trade dependence on China, a country with a totalitarian government devoid of democratic principles, no respect for the rule of law - as has been borne out by the detention of Stern Hu for more than a week without charge - and no regard for human rights or respect for minorities such as the Tibetans or the Uighurs. China puts the rights of the Communist Party and the Government before anything else. India, on the other hand, a democracy governed by the rule of law, has hardly been on the radar screen with our governments when it comes to trade and political ties. Why have they not pursued a stronger and closer relationship with India? Advertisement: Story continues below India's economy is growing almost as fast as China's, and with a similar population its market would demand similar amounts of our raw materials, not to mention endless possibilities for other Australian goods and services. As Wade points out, we share so many more interests with India than China, such as cricket, the English language and the Commonwealth. For too long the Chinese Government has believed it can dictate to other countries' politicians who they can or cannot meet, including the Dalai Lama and Taiwanese Government officials, while it happily carries on arming the Burmese junta and Robert Mugabe's regime. The Hu case should be a wake-up call to our politicians to stop behaving as though China was the only market for Australian products. We should be pursuing our wealth ethically by tying our future to democratic India and moving away from trade dependence on totalitarian China. Darryl Toohey Darlinghurst Outrageous Origin behaviour by no means in a league of its own Jenny Foldes (Letters, July 17) is correct to point out the double standards in rugby league, but not to say Rosetta Stone Software that "at no level in any other sport would such behaviour be deemed acceptable". One has only to look at the recent rugby series between South Africa and the British and Irish Lions. In the second Test two South African players were suspended - one for eye-gouging, the other for an illegal charge. Some South African officials argued that eye-gouging is the sort of thing that happens in the physical contact rugby involves. In the other case the Lions player was badly injured and had to leave the field. Yet in the third Test what did we see? South African players wearing armbands saying "Justice", in protest against the suspension of the second player. The double standards are everywhere. John Lees Castlecrag Bruce Hulbert (Letters, July 17) suggests children will be influenced by the on-field aggression of Origin III. League is the most physical of the football codes, yet the least physical - soccer - has a record of off-field violence that no other code comes near. Origin III was a brutal encounter, watched by nearly 3 million people. Not surprisingly, the next day they all went back to their daily routine without feeling the need to pummel the first NSW or Queensland supporter they saw. Mike Kenneally Balmain To readers who compare the brutality of Origin III and off-field violence: when was the last time you saw combatants take it to each other, then shake hands as if it never happened? That is the difference between sport and every Friday night in every city. If you can't tell the difference, don't watch. Zig Jamal Waramanga (ACT) The State of Origin game certainly had passion, but teams can play with passion without belting each other. If some of the blows had happened off the field, they would have amounted to assault and the police would be called. Where is the equity? Why aren't players who deliberately kick or bash their opponents on the football field charged?

Alice: Madness Returns will be released by Electronic Arts next month for Windows PCs, PS3 and Xbox 360.
