30 Dec 10 Stadium Journey Review: Madison Square Garden--Home of the New York Knicks

I always look forward to a great time when I watch the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the World Most Famous Arena.Truly an iconic place, MSG has hosted some of the most exciting events in the world. The arena always provides fans with an upbeat and pleasant experience, but it Detroit Lions
the team that can sometimes fall short of expectations.FANFARE Score: 30F ood and Beverage:5 While MSG has its assortments of classics (hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, etc), you know the city of New York can sometimes demand a higher variety.Senzai Sushi is the Garden very own sushi stand, where a full assortment of different Sushi can be freshly made before your very eyes.If youre looking for a quick bite, the specialty personal pizzas may also do the trick, but they aren recommended for a full meal. The best snack offered at the World Most Famous Arena is possibly the worldbest popcorn; Ive been enjoying the great popcorn for years, so it certainly comes with a raving recommendation. If you are sitting in some of the lower seats, you also have access to an expanded and perhaps more formal menu, but the waiters are extremely difficult to track down, as they often may try to avoid you. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of MSG great concession stand variety. If you have a Clubpass on your ticket, you are also granted access upstairs to the GardenPlay by Play restaurant. This bar and restaurant has numerous flat screens, video games, basketball hoops, and of course, good food and drinks. Its wide variety of different meals, whether they are an upgraded version of arena favorites or a different culturally fused dish, is complemented by a great selection of beers and soft drinksBuyers beware; certain wait staff has a tendency to pressure you with their ownPlay by Play favorites! With all the options here, you can never go wrong!A tmosphere:4 The atmosphere at Knicks games is always terrific. With the Knicks playing so poorly, such a great atmosphere just might be what brings most people to a game these Green Bay Packers jersey
days.Something at MSG can make you forget all your worries for a few hours, and completely immerse yourself in everything going on at the Garden, much like a great movie. The Knicks7th Ave Squad really knows how to get the crowd loud. The Knicks City Dancers and KnicksAcroback Tumblersare equally as exciting, although a bit corny. It comes with the territory I suppose, as I am sure most arenas have groups like these to pump up the crowd.N eighborhood:5 How can you say anything bad about New York City? There truly something for everyone, even if you simply would like to walk around before or after the game and enjoy the sites.Looking for somewhere to hang out and perhaps get something to eat? TheESPN Zone restaurant is just a half a mile away, providing fans with the most unique and realistic perspective outside of an arena. With jumbo screens playing just about any sporting event on TV, you can sit in actual leather cushioned reclining chairs while you watch and enjoy a meal. It may be a total gimmick, but I totally fell for it. It great!F ans:5 As poorly as the Knicks have played in recent years, it a real tribute to the fans that the energy never fails to be electrifying. Knicks fans are some of the most loyal in the world and it shows. They are always up on their feet, whether it be during the game or even during timeouts to cheer participants on in the various contests. These fans truly bleed orange and blue.As of late, you never fail to see Big Louisdancing around. Donning a Knicks No. 20 customized jersey, Big Louisgets the crowd up like no fan Ive ever seen as he appears on Diamondvision.A ccess:3 Based on how magnificent this arena really is and has always been, you would think convenience would be of a priority. In the packed NYC streets, parking is no more than average. While there are spacious bathrooms, you may have to walk quite a distance depending on where your seat is.But the absolute worst has to be the Garden escalators, which are completely shut down for a prolonged period of time following the game, causing a complete and utter pile up, and major frustration if you have to catch a train back home.As a Knicks season subscriber for a couple years now, here is a tip that I myself only learned of this season; there are elevators in hidden walkways around the arena that take you down a hell of a lot quicker than any staircase or escalader can. The difficulty is just keeping an eye out for these.R eturn on Investment:4 As far as the actual arena goes, it one of the most storied and fun places to be. There so much history behind the place, and everything the Garden has to offer really gives credibility to its tremendous reputation. The one small problem is at the base of the question, why does a fan come to a game? It because they are truly a fan, and enjoy cheering his/her team on to victory. The Knicks aren getting many of those lately, and for the money you pay, that is certainly a bit of Houston Texans jersey
a bummer. Let revisit this issue after the summer!E tc:4 I can help but think with a few simple and reasonable tweaks that MSG during a Knicks game would be absolutely perfect. The arena is already a great place to be, and the Knicks are poised for a complete summer makeover, which could result in more wins and excitement.MSG is also scheduled to undergo certain renovations, which may result in easier accessibility. The given points are all towards the hope and optimism that the Knicks and MSG hold, as well as its great performance through the years thus far!For this review and more.

29 Dec 10 2010 NBA Playoffs: A Cautionary Tale for LeBron James and the Cavaliers

Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty ImagesAs the NBA Playoffs get underway, the Cleveland Cavaliersfresh off a second straight season in which they led the league in victoriesare clearly one of the favorites to win the championship. At the beginning of the season, most experts tapped Cleveland, Orlando, and the L.A. Lakers as the teams to beatan easy prediction to make, and one that has held up.For Cleveland, especially, the pressure is on to deliver a title. LeBron James has turned in another MVP-like season, and acquisitions like Philadelphia Eagles jersey
Shaquille ONeal, Antawn Jamison, Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon, and Leon Powe have made the Cavs a more formidable opponent than they were a year ago.Not so fast, however. A glance at recent NBA history reveals a pattern that is not promising for Clevelandor any other franchise without a championship in their past.Take all the talk of parity in professional sports, and throw it out the window. In the NBA, especially, the concept has been a myth. When it comes to winning the ring, a handful of teams have dominated the league over the past 30 years.Beginning with the Lakers of Magic, Kareem, and company in 1979-80, only eight teams have tasted championship success in the last three decades. Two teamsthe Lakers and the Bullshave won half of those 30 championships. Add in the trophies claimed by Boston and San Antonio, and four teams have won 22 of the 30 titles. In the past decade alone, seven of the 10 championships were claimed by the Lakers (4) and the Spurs (3).The harsh reality of the NBA is that, somehow, the rich seem to get richer.Since 1979-80, the Lakers have won nine championships. That nearly one-third of the titles, claimed by one team. The Bulls of the Michael Jordan era won another six. Boston and San Antonio each won four.During that span the Detroit Pistons claimed three titles, and the Houston Rocketsin part, thanks to Jordan disappearance from the leaguewon two.Miami and Philadelphia? Theyre practically afterthoughts, with one championship apiece. What does it mean?If youre the Lakers, history is on your side. If youre Cleveland or Orlando, however, it nail-biting time. The odds are, quite simply, stacked against you. That not to say that Boston or San Antonio are favored over the Cavaliers or Magic just because theyve won multiple titles before. It does, however, reveal a simple truth: Winning an NBA championship isn easy.It is far more likely, however, when youve done it before. That why the Lakers, despite their late-season missteps, Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
should be favored as the playoffs begin.Cleveland appeared to be the team to beat a year ago. Then their weaknesses were revealed by Orlando efficient performance in the Eastern Conference finals, and summer vacation began two weeks early for the forlorn Cavaliers. To their credit, they did not rest on their laurels. They went out and restocked, and are a much better and deeper team.Even so, an Achilles heel has emerged in recent weeksthat of poor free throw shooting. As a team, Cleveland shot just 72 percent from the line this season, the worst average in the league.Guess who was second from the bottom? Orlando.Aggressiveness and the ability to get to the line are paramount in the postseason, and the Cavaliers and Magic exhibit both. However, if they don convert their free throw opportunities, it may cost them dearly.Theyre likely to meet in the Eastern Conference finals, where their poor free throw percentages would simply cancel one another out.Whichever one advances to the championship series would be vulnerable, however, if matched against the Lakers, Mavericks or Nuggets, all of whom are more accurate from the charity stripe. It could get especially ugly against the Mavericks, who led the league by converting 81.6 percent of San Diego Chargers jersey
their free throws. The fact remains that the path to a first NBA title is never easy. That skews the odds against teams like Cleveland, Orlando, Denver, and Dallas. It why the Lakers, with their 57 wins and history of NBA Finals success, remain the favorites to win it all.It also why the 50-win Spurs and Celtics should not be overlooked. The Spurs, in particular, are dangerous, since their four titles came with current cornerstones Tim Duncan and Greg Popovich in tow. When a team postseason pedigree includes multiple championships, all bets are off. History reveals that they clearly have an advantage on the road to the NBA Finals.

28 Dec 10 We'd Appreciate it If You Would Shut Up And Play!

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesIt is my opinion that we should never mix sports and politics, similar to mixing religion and politics. Why do most of us actually watch sports? This question can and would be answered ten different ways by ten different people. It is a safe bet that common answers would Oakland Raiders jersey
continually show up such as; entertainment, the vicarious thrill of being on the winning side, keeping up with a local team or player, and we should not leave out the sports people working the event for a pay check. An episode of CSI actually had a great explanation too. Sports are instant justice. Everyone knows the same rules, everyone plays by them, and when the rules are violated, punishments are given out swiftly and surely and (usually) fairly. Regardless of the sport, it in some way incorporates everything about people into it. Sports combine physical activity, mathematical precision, strategy, cunning and teamwork. Now cue up the Phoenix Suns and owner Robert Sarver. He has decided to insert his team into the political arena tonight with a protest, but only a half protest. Philadelphia Eagles jersey
He has his team, with the leagues permission wearing jerseys that say Los Suns.Sun translated from English to Spanish is Sol. Why only half heartedly change the jerseys? Why not put Los Sols on them? Your guess is as good as mine.Even Charles Barkley got it. Sports figures are not heroes, they are sports figures. We as citizens and parents are responsible for teaching our kids right from wrong. You may not like the law (SB 1070), but one thing is certain. We should teach our children right from wrong. We have a responsibility to teach this to our children.I am sure most of you know who Jim Rome is. Extending back nearly fifteen years he used a phrase repeatedly. This phrase was to have a take, and don suck. Essentially he was saying to be short, sweet, to the point, and Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
TRUTHFUL. The Sols are complaining about a state law that MIRRORS the existing federal statutes. Where have all of these whiners been for years under the EXACT same federal law? When a family struggles to spend hard earned money on an NBA playoff game, shouldn they get the entertainment they paid for without the owner OPINIONS? I know some of you are going to be mad at me, so be it. To quote Jim Rome, Have a take, and don suck!

27 Dec 10 2010 NBA Mock Draft Version 1.0 (2-of-3)

Hannah Johnston/Getty ImagesThis is part two of my three part NBA Mock Draft.(Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3)Full Draft Coverage on Eternal Mulligan(First before I begin giving you my first draft of the 2010 NBA Mock Draft season I want to preface this by saying I made the picks I did with the assumption that a few free agents are leaving their respected team and certain I feel are remaining. I think that D-Wade is staying in Miami, LeBron is leaving, Chris Bosh will no longer be a Raptor and Joe Johnson is exiting the way of Mike Woodson. I Houston Texans jersey
preface this by saying that if you don't agree I am sorry but I guess we won't know the true validity of the free agent market till July, 9th. I made my picks based on need, availability and a large amount of common sense. That being said I present you part 2-of-3 of the Mock Draft 1.0.) Just as last year was the year of the guard this year is a chance for many clubs to replenish their rosters will high quality SF and PF and a fair mix of hybrid guys that can score as a PF but the size of a center... 11. New Orleans Hornets: Donatas Motiejunas (PF/C) Lithuania It didn't take long but with the 11th pick I expect the Hornets to take the best international available in this years draft. He is a Andrea Bargnani type talent but has been criticized as a little un-focused. I notch that up to being the best player in a league and not caring. Either way I think he could immediately help a Hornets team that is in a bit of disarray. 12. Memphis Grizzlies: Patrick Patterson (PF) Kentucky The Grizzlies have three first round picks so if they don't make a move to get higher I think Patterson is a good fit for Memphis. He is one of the more experienced PF in this draft and would fit well in Lionel Hollins' system, plus Patterson is versatile enough to fit on the court with either Rudy Gay or Zach Randolph. 13. Toronto Raptors: Daniel Orton (PF/C) Kentucky Another Wildcat comes off the board with this pick and I think Orton is a security pick for Toronto if Chis Bosh leaves. Hopefully if Bosh decides to exit he will make it better for Toronto in a sign and trade but if he gets out of dodge and leaves the Raptors high and dry Orton might help patch a small part of the wound. 14. Houston Rockets: Hassan Whiteside (PF/C) Marshall Another security pick here for the Rockets. No one is really sure what Yao Ming will play like when he comes back and with Houston brass assuring fans that Luis Scola will return next year Whiteside would be a smart choice. The Rockets have max money this summer but they only have two names on their radar (Amare or Bosh). Chances are they wont get either so like many teams security in the draft is the most reassuring thing. 15. Milwaukee Bucks: Avery Bradley (SG) Texas The Bucks got a lot of miles out of Indianapolis Colts jersey
John Salmons and benefited from his production as the biggest upstart in the Eastern Conference. With Michael Redd coming off a season of injuries the multi-talented Bradley is a good pick from a team looking to get younger and quicker. A young backcourt of Jennings and Bradley could solidify a team that needs to start looking towards their promising future. 16. Minnesota Timberwolves: Gordon Hayward (SF) Butler Minnesota has three of the first twenty-three picks in the draft so if anyone is making a move it's them. Hayward made a name for himself in Butlers improbable run towards the national title. He averaged 15 points and 8 boards in the tournament and is a solid three point threat. He won't be a starter right away but think of him as a younger Jason Kapono just a little smaller. Definitely a point of improvement for the T-Wolves.17. Chicago Bulls: Damion James (SF) Texas (It bothers me that this is the first senior taken, but with the new CBA unknown this years draft is flooded with underclassmen)I think that James is a smart move here as a security if the LeBron rumors don't come true. The team still has faith in Luol Deng but you could see in the playoffs that after a few games of overplaying he became gassed quickly. James can step in and play immediately and will work well with Taj Gibson when he slides to the 2. 18. Miami Heat: James Anderson (SG) Oklahoma St. This was a toughest pick because this was the 4th or 5th place I think Anderson could go. He's talented (22.3 ppg) and could play SF is needed. He is also the best player as a D-Wade insurance policy (besides Evan Turner). If the rumors are true and Pat Riley is returning to the sidelines then Anderson could be groomed into an elite player and one of this drafts biggest steal. He has the Andre Iguodala potential but with less pressure. 19. Boston Celtics: Xavier Henry (SG) Kansas With the unknown future of Ray Allen in Boston and the fact that Michael Finley is not a long term solution Henry could be the player with the best chance to success immediately. Last season he hit 41% from beyond the arch and could be a big part of the long term Celtics success. He will have his growing pains because much of his negative attention is about his attitude. The Celtics have had this issue before and look where that got them... Rajon Rondo. 20. San Antonio Spurs: Luke Babbitt (SF) Nevada Just as they did with George Hill and his growth as the PG of the future and the steal of Jacksonville Jaguars jersey
the 2009 draft in DeJuan Blair as the PF of the future, Babbitt could be the SF of the future for the Spurs. Who knows how long Richard Jefferson will stay in town and its a good idea to get a young talent in the mix before Jefferson's skills diminish.Well that's part two of Mock Draft 1.0... I appreciate the comments so drop mea line...

26 Dec 10 The Jordan, Kobe and LeBron Debate! Who's Better? Who Actually Cares?

Robert Laberge/Getty ImagesThe debate about who is better among three particular players is still a hot and heavily disputed topic. While all sides will make a strong case for all three athletes, as a basketball fan who often gets sucked into this argument, I have recently found myself answering with one Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
question.Who really cares and why?The mystic surrounding the player who without a doubt dominated the headlines in the 90's. Michael Jordan gave a breath of new life to the NBA. Michael "Air" Jordan was and is still the name most heard when the subject of Basketball is thrown into the conversation.Kobe Bryant, (love him or hate him), is the top star in the NBA today. All ready having four titles and looking to win a fifth, Kobe has helped raise his team to a championship team and will continue his legacy for a few more years.LeBron James is the young powerhouse in the league who is probably the all around best player in the NBA. His free agency is still topping the NBA topic list while the Celtics/Lakers Finals show down is a close second. All three players are fantastic and are the best in their own right. Jordan had his time. Kobe is having his time now. LeBron's time is most surely to come. The fact is you will never truly know who the best is. Why? Because Jordan and Pippen where the top when Kobe entered the league. Jordan and Pippens reign came to an end and here comes Shaq and Kobe in the start of the new millennium. When Kobe leaves it will be LeBron's turn with a suitable partner. Someone is sure to soon follow behind LeBron and soon a fourth will be added to this list. What I think most fan's are forgetting, (including me until recently), is all three of these men are friends and have a lot of respect for each other and the talent they bring to the game. This respect and friendship is Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
what causes this debate to continue. So now when this debate arises I simply sit back and smile while the people have it out. The truth is no one will ever know and that's the way we like it!There is no way all three will ever play each other in their prime! Sorry folks you will never make a stronger case for one you can't make for another.

25 Dec 10 Why the Knicks Hiring Isiah Thomas as a Consultant Is Not a Bad Move

Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesIsiah Thomas is back working for the team that fired him two years ago. It was announced that the Knicks would bring back Isiah Thomas in a much more limited role as a consultant.Thomas top priority will still be coaching and recruiting the FIU Panthers. Many blame the Knicks failures this decade on Isiah Thomas, and rightfully so. Thomas made some bad decisions that severely hurt the Knicks' long-term future. In fact, the Knicks still haven fully cleaned up the stain Isiah left on the franchise.Thomas is the reason Donnie Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
Walsh put the 2010 free-agency plan in place. He is the reason the Knicks had been cap strung before Donnie Walsh took over. Thomas is also the reason the Knicks forfeited this draft first-round pick to the Utah Jazz.Bottom line: When you associate Isiah Thomas and the Knicks, only bad memories come to mind. However, I going to prove why bringing back Isiah isn necessarily a bad move.First off, Isiah Thomas is only being hired as consultant, as this isn even a full time job. Thomas is still the head coach at Florida International University. Some may think this is just a ploy to get Thomas back on the GM chair if Donnie Walsh were to step down due to health reasons. However, I assure you that even if Walsh were to step down, the Knicks already have a few candidates in mind. Allen Houston has been the rumored front runner to land the job, and former Denver Nuggets VP of basketball operations, Mark Warkenstein, has emerged as strong candidate. Thomas is still under contract to coach FIU and if he were to accept a GM job, he wouldn be honoring his commitment to FIU. Donnie Walsh is currently in charge and even if he were to step down, Thomas would not be considered as an option. Is Bringing Back Isiah Thomas A Good Move For The Knicks? Is Bringing Back Isiah Thomas A Good Move For The Knicks?Yes36.7%No63.3%Total votes: 98Thomas will be involved in assisting senior management and recruiting. This is a good hire for the Knicks, Isiah Thomas has always had an eye for talent as he is one of the best talent evaluators in the NBA. Thomas made draft picks that seemed questionable at the time, but proved to be good decisions.Thomas first ever selection was Damon Stoudemire, with the seventh overall pick. Stoudemire won rookie of the year. Thomas also found a gem in Tracy McGrady at the ninth overall pick, and he was the one who drafted Marcus Camby.Thomas was a solid drafter, selecting recent all-star David Lee, Nate Robinson, and Trevor Ariza. Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
Thomas was one of the first in the Knicks organization to start scouting Danillo Gallinari, who is currently the Knicks best young player.Thomas may have overspent when it came to free agents, but when it came to finding talent he knew what he was doing. The Knicks will call on Thomas to provide analysis and insight on young prospects from around the world. The Knicks could use Thomas' opinion on prospects considering they completely missed it in the 2009 draft after they picked Jordan Hill instead of a point guard like Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Darren Collison, or Ty Lawson. Say what you want about him, but Isiah Thomas is a draft genius.Despite his bad run with the Knicks, Thomas is still widely respected around the league, especially by the players. Many of the players don look at Isiah Thomas as the guy who ran the Knicks to the ground, but as the 12-time all star, hall of famer, top-50 player of all time that played with the Detroit Pistons. Thomas was instrumental in the Knicks acquiring Amare Stoudemire. Donnie Walsh and James Dolan repeatedly thanked Thomas during the Amare Stoudemire press conference, and hinted at a possible return. The Knicks even sent Thomas to Ohio as a last ditch effort in the LeBron James recruitment process.Expect the Knicks to use Thomas as a recruiting tool next summer when they go for Carmelo Anthony.Thomas return to the Knicks was inevitable. He remained very close with owner James Dolan and Donnie Walsh. Even after he was fired by the Knicks, Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
Thomas remained with the Knicks in an unspecified role until he was hired by FIU.The Knicks remained so close to Thomas that they wouldn give Magic Johnson free tickets when Johnson wanted to visit MSG. Johnson and Thomas had fallen out after Thomas blasted Johnson in a book.Thomas is ecstatic to be back working for the Knicks saying, "I'm excited to work with the Knicks again, I wish my mom was still alive to see this."So before Knicks fans go crazy, wondering how the hell the organization would hire Thomas, considering they spent the past two-and-a-half years cleaning up his mess, reconsider. Isiah Thomas is only being hired as a consultant, which can only help the Knicks.

24 Dec 10 LeBron James: The Reason Everybody (Except Heat Fans) Hates Him

The freshest face in MiamiMarc Serota/Getty ImagesNobody is doubting Lebron James talent as a great NBA player. With his extremely predominant physique, his sixth sense of court awareness, and his overwhelming presence on the court, it is no fluke he has grabbed the attention of basketball fans worldwide. However, his "decision" to head to Miami to team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh left a sour taste in the mouths' of NBA fans everywhere. No, I am not talking about his decision to leave the Cavs and join the Heat. I Reebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey
am talking about his hour long "Decision" which ran on like a mid season election debate. The fact of the matter is simple. LebronJames used this hour long "decision" as an attention getter. It does not takean entirehour to announce where one will be playing next season. Here's an example of how it should have gone."Hey, Lebron. Where will you be playing next season?""Miami."Look at that. It took about three seconds to get that done. So, why did Lebron use a full hour of television time to make this "decision"? And let's not get on that "He did it to raise money for Boys and Girls Clubs". Sure, he probably did raise money for The Boys and Girls Clubs. However, we all know that was secondary compared to the attention he so desperately loves. He's "The Chosen One", the "King With No Ring". Really? The "King With No Ring"? I'm pretty sure you're not the King if you don't have the crown, or the ring in this case.Don't get me wrong. I think Lebron James is a great player. He brings energy to all of his teammates, Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
and the desire to win. However, he lacks a certain drive to pull off the big game when it really matters in the postseason. There's a reason Michael Jordan has six NBA Championships and Kobe Bryant has five.Jordan was(and Kobe still is) clutch when it counted.Themajority offans whoare sad Lebron left miserable, economically depressed Cleveland for sunny SouthFlorida are Cavs fans. However, the way he handled it with his televised soap opera upset just about everybody except Miami Heat fans. And rightfully so. For Heat fans, they added one of the best players in the NBA in Lebron James to team up with newly acquired Chris Bosh and the face of their franchise, Dwyane Wade.Let the record show, fans are not mad atLebronfor leavingCleveland! They are just Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
upset by the way he handled it. Lebron, if you want to better your career and you feel teaming up with your two pals will help you accomplish that goal, then by all means go ahead, But the fact you dragged the media around like puppy dogswho anticipatedyour every word made you look selfish and needy of attention. And you wonder why we were mad

23 Dec 10Referees Favor Russell Westbrook Over Derrick Rose!!!

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesA bleeding Derrick Rose headed to the bench to have his nose bandaged during the Dallas Mavericks game last Friday night. After it fell off several times, trainers were able to keep the bandage on by applying three or four of them at the Oakland Raiders jersey
same time. That night, Derrick Rose went to the line nine times. The strange thing about that number is that is was only the second highest free throw attempts made by Rose this ENTIRE season. The most attempts Rose has made this season was 13 against Detroit, which is also the only time this season he has broken double digits. The truth is, Derrick Rose is averaging only 5.5 free throw attempts per game. That is ridiculous. As many are aware, Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook both entered the NBA the same year. They also have similar styles of play. Both are athletic and electrifying players who drive to the basket with extreme prejudice. They also happen to be good friends. Both are highly respected...except by the referees. Case in point: Name: Russell Westbrook Team: OKC Thunder Years: 3 PPG: 23.5 (8th) APG: 7.8 (9th) FTA (Free Throw Attempts): 9.3 (2nd) Total Free Throw Attempts: 121 (2nd) Name: Derrick Rose Team: Chicago Bulls Years: 3 PPG: 25.2 (4th) APG: 8.5 (8th) FTA (Free Throw Attempts): 5.5 (35th) Total Free Throw Attempts: 61 (35th) Is this an anomaly? No it is not. Since their rookie season in 2008-2009, here's how their total free throw attempts have compared: Derrick Rose 2008-2009: 250 (80th) 2009-2010: 338 (38th) 2010-2011: 61 (35th) Russell Westbrook 2008-2009: 428 (24th) 2009-2010: 422 (22nd) 2010-2011: 121 (2nd) As anyone can plainly see, we have two very similar styles of players, but there is a huge Philadelphia Eagles jersey
discrepancy regarding free throws. Why is this? Is Derrick Rose so fast they can't see him? Not likely. Derrick Rose is good, but Russell Westbrook is good, too. So what is the reason for such a wide disparity? Funny thing is, no one seems to know or can explain away why this is happening. This is not good for Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. So on the outside chance that any referees happen across this article, please, please, please...GIVE DERRICK ROSE SOME MORE DAMN CALLS!!!

NBA Free Agency 2010: Amar'e Stoudemire Will Sign with the New York Knicks

After a weekend of persuasive courtship by the Knicks, Amare Stoudemire announced Monday that he will sign with the team on July 8th, the date when free agents are officially able to sign new contracts. The new acquisition (although a steep one, reportedly at $99.7 million over five years) is the Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
Knicks’ most notable one in years. Stoudemire also provides the team with massive creditability as it continues to attract some of the league’s best players via free agency.LeBron James, clearly the best of the available players, has revealed that he will announce his decision as to where he will play next season during a primetime, one-hour specialon Thursday night (July 8th) at 9:00 p.m. EST to be aired on ESPN.The long-awaited decision certainly has Knicks fans all around the world incredibly anxious, as does the assumed signing of Stoudemire and every roster move over the last two-plus years leading up to this very moment. The concept of reeling in a star of King James’ stature and sheer talent in order to finally deliver another championship has been Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
the ultimate goal.In the meantime, fans can take pleasure in watching Amare

NBA Free Agency: Why a South Beach Superteam Could Ruin the NBA

Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesTwo down, one to go.Reports are claiming two of the NBA's biggest free agent fish have been hooked by the Miami Heat, leaving the biggest fish of them all lurking in free agency waters.Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are reportedly on board to join forces in Miami, while the world will wait until 9 ET Thursday night to hear where King LeBron James will reign for the foreseeable future. But as we inch closer to "Decision 2010: LeBron," many insiders and pundits believe the opportunity to play with Bosh and Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
Wade in Miami's international market will overwhelm, and eventually lure LeBron to South Beach. If LeBron does, in fact, choose the Heat, the team will have capped off the most prolific free agency period in sports history, and possibly staked their claim as the NBA's team to beat for the next five to 10 years.Without a doubt, watching LeBron, Wade, and Bosh play together on a nightly basis would be sublime. Sports has never seen anything like this, beyond the Olympic and All-Star teams. And, on a personal note, I'm on my hands and knees praying for LeBron to sign with the Heat after watching them plummet since their 2006 championship. This team has the potential to knock off the 1972 Dolphins as Miami's all-time favorite team.Set Miami aside, and this is something the entire world could watch in amazement, because watching these three play together would be simply amazing.Imagine Phi Slamma Jamma, the Lake Show, and even a hint of the Harlem Globetrotters mixed into one megastar roster. The possibilities are endless. But, setting my Heat-bias aside, would LeBron joining the Heat ruin the league?First of all, Wade, Bosh, and LeBron playing together could be a literally unstoppable force. The rest of the Heat roster might not be so special, but imagine how Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
much better Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers, and Udonis Haslem would be with these three on the floor. But that's beside the point.Imagine the dominance this team would display over the league. Honestly, who could keep up with this team? Perhaps the Lakers? But Kobe is approaching 32, and would L.A.'s veteran roster really be able to keep up with the Heat's young, mercurial roster?Beyond the Lakers, is there another team that even stands a chance? This is where the NBA runs into some serious problems. Sure, this might be an awesome ride for a season or two (Heat fans will never grow tired), but since when is it fun to have virtually no competition in a league?Rivalries would become meaningless. How could fans get excited to follow their teams for a full season when they know the Heat will claim the championship at year's end? And, what about the team's bottom feeders? The Nets, Wizards, and 76ers would need virtual impeccable drafting and free agency signings if they wished to even compete with the Heat over the duration of their potential dominance. After so many years of one team towering above the rest of the league, it's hard to believe the league's fans would be willing to continue devoting time and money to their beloved franchises. For all we know, LeBron might have zero interest in joining the Heat, fearing that winning championships with two superstars could diminish his legacy.Either way, we will just have to wait and see where the King chooses to rest his crown when Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
he makes his decision tomorrow night. If LeBron decides Miami is his destination, the NBA simply must hope that a super-trio would captivate both its existing fans, as well as a whole new generation that will watch not with an overwhelming pessimism that their team has no legitimate shot at a title, but in, well, amazement.

New York Yankees Might Bump the Derek Jeter Offer To $51 Million

: I didn’t want to do this in a few separate updates, so I figured I’d do it like this. Here are the latest updates on the Derek Jeter/Yankees negotiations:As you already know Jeter and his agent met with the Yankees brass for the first time since Nov. 8 yesterday.Jon Heyman reported that there was “renewed optimism” after the meeting.Heyman said that the Yankees may increase their offer to $51 million with a fourth year option but that there was “nothing imminent”.Bob Kapisch reported something similar, that talks were Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
positive, but that there was “nothing imminent”.After the meeting Hank Steinbrenner said that he was confident that Jeter would remain a Yankee and that his brother, Hal, would agree. It was Jeter’s camp that reached out to the Yankees not the other way around which may indicate their willingness to get a deal done.Three possible backup options that Jeter previously had—the Dodgers (Juan Uribe), Giants (Miguel Tejada) and Cardinals (Ryan Theriot)—have all filled their holes at shortstop. It’s possible that the Angels could afford him, but that seems like a stretch. Nobody else has either (1) need for a shortstop, (2) the money to bid for Jeter, (3) a shot at winning.Meaning, Jeter has no leverage at all.The Yankees are bidding against themselves if they up their offer from $45 million to $51 million, but at this point it’s probably worth the difference to settle this thing peacefully if that’s what it will take.TYU put out a rumor that he’d heard which was that they were getting ready to Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
offer $51 million with a fourth year option and a $6 million buyout. That actually makes sense at some level for both sides. That guarantees Jeter $57 million over the next three years, which is an annual average of $19 million per season or just about the average salary he’s made over the past 10 years. That way Jeter saves face and the Yankees aren’t getting entirely ripped off.The phrase of the night was “nothing imminent”, so don’t get your hopes up that anything will happen tonight. This does make me think that this could potentially be wrapped up by the winter meetings. I wouldn’t have necessarily agreed to that Tuesday morning.Related StoriesNovember 30, 2010—Jeter and Agent Meet with Yankees Today (Updated)November 30, 2010—Link: Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey

Jayson Werth: Did the Nationals Overpay for Their New Right Fielder?

Jayson Werth has agreed to the largest contract in Washington Nationals' historyDoug Pensinger/Getty ImagesThe Washington Nationals signed Jayson Werth to a seven-year, $126 million contract. I have one question...why?I mean, if you're going to dish out that type of a contract to an outfielder, why not give it to a younger Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
and more athletic Carl Crawford?Werth will be knocking on the door of the 40-year-old club when this contract is up, and he's had one really good season (in 2009) and two good seasons (2008 and 2010).In fact, prior to 2008, Werth had only played in 100 games once (102 in 2005 with the Dodgers).Sure, Werth helped the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2008 World Series championship, and yes, he did hit 36 home runs in his first All-Star season in '09. But has he really shown that he's worth (no pun intended) $126 million at age 31?The Nationals are a team that is looking to finally gain some respect in the league. Since the team came to Washington from Montreal, it has finished higher than fifth in the NL East once...fourth in 2007.But they now have a core group of young players, highlighted of Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
course by third baseman Ryan Zimmerman. Phenom Stephen Strasburg underwent Tommy John Surgery late last season, but his return will only make the Nats more fearsome. Bryce Harper will be in the big leagues in no time. Ian Desmond is blossoming into a star shortstop.Who should the Nationals have given a seven-year, $126 million contract to?Who should the Nationals have given a seven-year, $126 million contract to?Jayson Werth8.1%Carl Crawford40.5%No one45.9%Other5.4%Total votes: 37They are now a team to be reckoned with, and Werth will certainly add some pop to that lineup. But I do believe that Crawford would have been a much better fit, for probably around the same number of dollars. It is possible that Crawford did not wish to sign with the Nationals, but I would hope the Nats at least kicked his tires before handing out such a large contract to Werth.MLB.com reported that the Mets' new GM Sandy Alderson is just as shocked as I am."It makes some of our contracts look pretty good," Alderson quipped. "I Arizona Cardinals jersey
thought they were trying to reduce the deficit in Washington."Granted, the Mets dished out a large contract to Jason Bay in last year's offseason, and he had a dismal 2010. But if anything, that only proves the point of handling free agents with caution.Winning is the name of the game, but this is by far the largest contract, both in years and dollars, that the Nationals have ever given out, and I just hope for their sake they didn't give it to the wrong outfielder.

20 Dec 10 Fantasy Football Week 10 Quarterbacks: Bradford, McCoy and Tebow Waiver Wire Studs?

Sam Bradford the eyes of waiver wire studJ. Meric/Getty ImagesWeek 10 is upon us so your fantasy team is either suffering from a myriad of injuries you could not predict, hamstrings, concussions and ineptness, (although not technically an injury spreads through a team like the bubonic plague… Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
Cowboys anyone?) bye weeks and now Thursday night games. But my current concern is with back–up quarterbacks. More specifically rookie quarterbacks who are owned in less than half of the fantasy leagues according to CBS fantasy tracker. So are they worth picking up on the waiver for that injury and apathy you couldn’t draft against?Let’s start with number one:Sam BradfordThe number one overall pick by the Saint Louis Rams is owned in 58% of fantasy leagues. Does that mean that 42% of you have two quarterbacks better than Bradford? Although losing his number one receiver for the season, Bradford has demonstrated great he is not a one trick pony.Yes, it helps to have Steven Jackson to hand the ball to, but in his last three games Bradford has five touchdowns and no interceptions. He is not going to gain you major fantasy points by amassing large quantities of yardage, (see aforementioned Steven Jackson) but his touchdown to interception ratio in his last three outings definitely warrants waiver wire consideration.uumm third rounder?....Colt McCoy burgeoning waiver wire studMatt Sullivan/Getty ImagesThis week he plays San Francisco 49ers, who are also coming off a bye week. There are worse options than Bradford. Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
This week you should have better optioins, so get him and hold him.Colt McCoyMcCoy waited for the third-round to be drafted. Then he waited for two quarterbacks before him to go down with injuries. According to CBS Fantasy tracker he is owned in 8% of the fantasy football leagues. In week 9 against the Patriots McCoy completed 14 of 19 passes for 174 yards and ran for 20 yards with one touchdown. Yes, he is in a system that doesn’t quite fit his style but his quick release and ability to scamper around and his fearlessness make him desirable as a number two quarterback. This week the Browns play the Jets, not the best match-up, but I said the same when they played the Steelers and McCoy held up better than most.Tim TebowTebow is owned in 4% of fantasy leagues and I am guessing this is purely on name recognition, likability and the ever-present hopefulness. Although, to give the man his due, he has two rushing touchdowns and seems to be a fixture in the Broncos version of the wildcat.Second Half of the Season Which Rookie Will Be The StudSecond Half of the Season Which Rookie Will Be The StudSam Bradford76.6%Colt McCoy12.3%Tim Tebow8.4%Jimmy Clausen0.0%Tony Pike2.6%Total votes: 154And hey, he is writing a memoir. There is a lingering hope that because the Broncos season is less than ideal Tebow may see more time, but as a fantasy option, wait for the memoir.Jimmy Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
Clausen and Tony PikeChild please…Clausen is owned in 4% of fantasy leagues so I imagine there are a lot of Notre Dame fans who play fantasy football. Carolina is down to its number three running back,(who does look like a good waiver wire pick up), Steve Smith has the most dropped passes in his division and this week they play an angry Tampa Bay Bucs team that has something to prove. To date, Clausen has one touchdown and four interceptions and was pulled in the fourth quarter of the last game after coming in for an injured Matt Moore. Fox hasn’t announced whether he will start Clausen or Pike. Either way, start the Bucs defense.

19 Dec 10 Pittsburgh Steelers Cuts, Bumps and Bruises: Jeff Reed Cut, Other Injury Updates

Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesThe Pittsburgh Steelers officially released placekicker Jeff Reed this morning after yet another week of missing makeable mid-range field goals.Reed was playing under the team’s “franchise tag” this season after the two sides could not come to Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
an agreement on a contract extension, but he certainly did not live up to the title that was paying him the average salary of the top five kickers in the NFL.After nine games this season, Reed had only made an abysmal 68 percent of his field goal attempts, making just 15 of 22 kicks.Reed was brought in as an undrafted free agent from North Carolina in 2002 to fill in for the injured Todd Peterson. After finishing the season with 100 points and proving to be deadly accurate in the swirling wind of Pittsburgh, Reed was signed long-term by the Steelers, who released Peterson in the off-season.From the 2002 season on, Reed was one of the few kickers in the NFL to be relatively unhindered by the open end of Heinz Field. Reed's accuracy in poor weather conditions provided job security for the once undrafted North Carolina product. The last few seasons, however, have shown a sharp decline in accuracy, combined with several alcohol related incidents, that caused many to question whether or not he was drinking his way out of the job.Reed has been erratic at best this season, missing as many as three field goals in a game against Baltimore, ultimately costing the Steelers the game. Missing a 26-yard field goal against the Patriots on Sunday night was apparently theReebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
straw that finally broke the camel's back.Reed was released this morning in a meeting with head coach Mike Tomlin, who was involved in trying out former Cowboys and Redskins placekicker Shaun Suisham this morning as well. The Steelers signed Suisham, who has a 79.4 field goal percentage for his career, this morning after he proved his wares at Heinz Field in front of the Steelers brass. Suisham also provides a strong ability in the kickoff aspect of special teams, something Reed consistently struggled with throughout his career in Pittsburgh. While Suisham may not be the long-term solution to the Steelers’ kicking woes it will not be difficult to improve on the poor performance Reed has turned in this season. It is likely that the Steelers will reevaluate the position at season’s end.Injury Notes:Hines Ward—is likely to play this coming week against the Raiders after suffering a mild concussion in the first quarter Sunday night.Troy Polamalu—Has a strained Achilles tendon and will be Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
limited in practice this week with the expectation that he will play Sunday against Oakland.Lawrence Timmons—Is also likely to play this week after suffering a hip contusion in Sunday's loss against the Patriots. He will be limited in practice as a result of the injury, but should be ready to play come game day.

18 Dec 10 Jeff Reed May Have Worn Out His Welcome As Steelers Set To Audition Kickers

Jared Wickerham/Getty ImagesAnother week...and another deflating field goal miss by Pittsburgh Steelers place kicker Jeff Reed. Reed, who is the Steelers' franchise player, is having one of the worst years of his career. Before last night's loss to the Patriots he ranked 33rd in the league in field Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
goal percentage. For those keeping count at home, there are only 32 NFL teams. What did he do to improve that percentage? Nothing. One week after missing a field goal which would have iced the Cincinnati Bengals, he missed a 26-yard field goalwhich cost the team much needed points, field position and even more importantly, momentum. For someone who felt that he was treated unfairly by the Steelers in the offseason, despite the fact that as a franchise player he is making top five kicker money, you would think he'd be anxious to prove it Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
on the field. Instead he has been arguably the worst kicker in the league this year and is showing signs of getting worse. His kick-offs were going much farther on average earlier in the season, but now they are routinely coming down around the 10-yard line. Combine these pathetic numbers with his off-the-field antics over the past few years, and I think this season could easily be Reed's last in a black and gold uniform. Adding even more insult to injury, it came out today that Jeff Reed is unhappy at how some of the fans are treating him this season. I'm sorry, Jeff. I'm sorry we expect you actually to convert some field goals for this team. That IS your job after all. The Steelers front office is also unhappy with this season's results from Reed, as they are planning to bring in several kickers Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
for auditions this week. Maybe it's a smokescreen to try and get more production from Reed, but at this point the numbers don't lie. Jeff Reed is an awful kicker. You've been money in the past, Jeff, but if this is the end, you can't blame the fans—you can only blame yourself.

17 Dec 10 NFL Game Preview for November 28, 2010: Pittsburgh Steelers (-6) Buffalo Bills

Ben RoethlisbergerMatthew Stockman/Getty ImagesBetting overview The Buffalo Bills were close to winning games with impressive NFL scores against the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs before they finally scored their first win of the season over the Detroit Lions. After Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
taking the Chiefs and Ravens deep into overtime, NFL betting experts were suggesting that it was only a matter of time before the Bills scored their first win. The Pittsburgh Steelers had mixed NFL predictions in the preseason. With starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out for the first four weeks with a suspension, fans did not know what to expect when Big Ben returned. The Steelers wound up going 3-1 in that stretch, and at 7-3 the Steelers are one of the top teams in the AFC. A loss to the Patriots at home still lingers for the Steelers but, for now, they should really focus on a feisty Buffalo Bills team. Offense The Steelers offense has relied a little more on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger this season than fans are used to. Running back Rashard Mendenhall does have 811 yards and eight touchdowns this season, but there is no other Pittsburgh runner with more than 150 yards. The Steelers used to attack with a speed running back and a pounding running back, and now it is just Mendenhall. Roethlisberger has performed well, but this is just not the Steelers offense we are used to seeing. The Bills, on the other hand, are starting to bring back the look of an offense that won games in the 1990s for them. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a gun-slinger who makes Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
some mistakes but, more often than not, he finds his target.Running back Fred Jackson became the only feature back when Marshawn Lynch was traded to Seattle and rookie C.J. Spiller pulled his hamstring. Jackson has been more than up to the task and has carried the team up and down the field with authority. Defense The Bills still have one of the worst defenses in football, but it showed signs of improvement in last week’s win over the Bengals. The Bills defense managed to cause turnovers in that Bengals game, which is something the Bills could not do all season. The Bills defense had not intercepted the ball all season long, but they managed two picks against Carson Palmer. The problem for the Bills defense is that they are playing Big Ben and the Pittsburgh offense which, as they will find out, is a significant upgrade from Cincinnati. The Steelers defense hits hard and runs fast. The secondary, led by Troy Palomalu, is one of the fastest in the league. The linebackers, like James Harrison, punish Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
runners and passers all day long. The biggest problem for the Bills in this game will be their offensive line.Gun-slinger Fitzpatrick may wind up spending most of the game running for his life. The Bottom Line Ralph Wilson Stadium is sold out with Bills fans hoping to see a third Bills win in a row, and the first at the Ralph. While the Bills will give the Steelers all they can handle, the Steelers can handle a lot more than Buffalo is able to give.Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers

16 Dec 10 Michael Vick Redemption: Is Return To Stardom Affecting Our View of Him?

Nick Laham/Getty ImagesMichael Vick is having one heck of a season. He supplanted Kevin Kolb as the starting quarterback of the Eagles, and he's done it so well that no one is even thinking of questioning Andy Reid's decision.Michael Vick was convicted of dogfighting charges in 2007, and since his release Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
from prison, he's been fighting a never-ending public image battle. When he was returning to the league last year, there was a huge debate over whether any team would want to deal with the kind of public relations nightmare signing him would create. Now Vick is a winner and suddenly is popular in one of the toughest sports cities in America, Philadelphia. It says something if the Philadelphia fans are embracing Vick, but it also brings up the larger question of whether the Phili fans, and the nation at large, would be so willing to buy his story of contrition and redemption if he'd come out and thrown four interceptions and fumbled away the game.If there's anything to be learned from this, it's that human nature, and America's obsession with sports, doesn't change. We want to root for winners and we want nothing to do with losers. If Vick were playing horribly, there would be nothing but dog-fighting jokes being told about Vick and he would be getting booed out of town.Do You Believe Michael Vick's Redemption Story?Do You Believe Michael Vick's Redemption Story?Yes80.8%No10.6%I love Dogs Too Much, He's Dead To Me8.6%Total votes: 339Ironically, Vick's success this year has opened the very window to his redemption losing would've closed and locked. The fact that people want to know what Vick has done since his conviction means they want to know if they still should root for him, on-field heroics aside or not.So the debate now has turned to "Should we accept Michael Vick back into the league?" to "Should we believe him when he says he's a changed a man?"Vick has become a poster boy for the idea in America that anyone who has paid for their crimes and done their prison time has earned a second chance. While Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
the type of crimes Vick committed are heinous on any level to Western Civilization, the fact is he did confess to the crimes, paid his fines, did his jail time, and like any other person coming out of prison, the rules of society demand we give him a second chance.Vick is on the lecture circuit, talking about his dog-fighting days, and how he perceived the violence at the time. While most of what he says is believable, and understandable, not all of it adds up.Vick says it was the "culture" he grew up in that moved him toward running his own dog-fighting ring. That's completely believable as you go around certain areas of the country, you run into things that are completely foreign to your sensibilities.Nick Laham/Getty ImagesHowever, when he said he didn't know it was "wrong," I find fault with that because of the laws on the books, and the steps he had taken to conceal it from the public. Even if he didn't think it was morally wrong, he knew it was illegal, and he knew on some level he didn't want to get caught. But based on the interviews he's done, and the word of others like Tony Dungy, it is becoming believable that Vick is changed man. He certainly won't be running anymore dog-fighting rings, and his dedication to his job speaks to a new level of professionalism. While it is "just football," Vick is approaching it like the best in the business do. He's going to the facility every day, practicing, breaking down tape, attending meetings, and doing the things we as "regular people" would expect of Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
a guy playing at that level.Yes, winning has affected our view, but in this case it might be a good thing, otherwise he might have just dismissed Vick as another spoiled athlete who lost it all due to poor decisions. As we stand here today, and only Vick knows for sure if our view of him is right or wrong. Vick appears to be on the right track, and we can only hope he doesn't deviate from that course again.

Atlanta Falcons Riding Fourth-Quarter Points to 9-2 Record and Elite NFL Status

Head coach Mike Smith has had a lot to smile about in the fourth quarter this season.Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThe Atlanta Falcons improved to 9-2 and gained control of their destiny en route to a top seed in the NFC by downing the Green Bay Packers Sunday. Matt Bryant’s 37-yard 43 Polamalu black jersey
field goal gave the Falcons the 20-17 win. The kick was Bryant’s third game-winner of the season, and fourth-quarter points are a big reason why Atlanta is among the NFL’s elite. “You’ve got to score points in the fourth quarter of the ball game, either to seal the game or to be able to come back,” head coach Mike Smith said. “And to do that...I can’t say enough about the resiliency of this team.” The Falcons have scored 85 points this season in the fourth quarter or overtime, just over 30 percent of their 276 total points. Meanwhile, their opponents have scored just 44 points in the fourth quarter or overtime. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only team to hold the Falcons scoreless in the fourth quarter this season. 4 Brett Favre White jersey

NFL Fantasy Football Week 13: Players To Start This Week

If you are looking for an edge on your opponent this week, you can be thankful for our “Fantasy Football Start ‘Ems” for Week 13.Jay Cutler (Chicago Bears) @ Detroit Cutler had arguably his best game of the season in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles, throwing for 247 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He has been able to avoid turnovers recently, with just three interceptions in his last four games, and will take on the Detroit Lions this week in what should be a favorable matchup. In 4 Brett Favre White jersey
Week 1 against the Lions, Cutler threw for a season-high 372 yards along with two touchdowns and one interception. Detroit has allowed 16.8 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season, and has allowed seven touchdown passes while not intercepting a pass over their last two games. In fact, the Lions have only intercepted two passes over their last six games. Cutler is a top-10 fantasy option and a solid QB1 this week.LaDainian Tomlinson (New York Jets) @ New EnglandTomlinson had 13 carries for 49 yards and two catches for 14 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 12, which actually ended his streak of four games in a row with at least five receptions. That could change in Week 13 against the New England Patriots, who have allowed a league-most 82 receptions and a league-high 649 receiving yards to opposing running backs this season.Shonn Greene has taken more of the workload lately, but Tomlinson should remain a prominent part of the Jets’ passing game this Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
week.Tomlinson makes for a nice RB2 in standard leagues this week, with slightly more value in PPR leagues. Santonio Holmes (New York Jets) @ New England Holmes had five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown in Week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and now has four touchdowns over the last three games. Holmes also has at least five receptions in four straight contests.Week 13 brings a favorable matchup on Monday night against the New England Patriots, who have allowed 24.9 fantasy points to opposing wide receivers this season and have allowed seven touchdowns to the position over their last three games.Holmes has emerged as the top target for Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez, and that should continue this week.He makes for a very solid WR2 this week, and is a very good bet to find the end zone.Visanthe Shiancoe (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Buffalo Shiancoe had three receptions for 54 yards against the Washington Redskins in Week 12, which was his best yardage total since Week 9.He should be able to build on that success this week against the Buffalo Bills, who have allowed the second-most fantasy points to opposing tight ends (9.9 per game) this season. The Bills have also allowed the most touchdowns to opposing tight ends, with eight this season.Look for Shiancoe to at least find the end zone for the first time since Week 9 this Sunday, and that makes him a solid fantasy tight end this week.Read More Content Here:Bruno Boys Fantasy 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey

Cincinnati Bengals: Carson Palmer Destined To Play Out Career in California

The only way the 2010 Bengals season could get any worse is if the mascot were to get arrested. Whoops. Wrong local football team. The way this team gift wraps victories for other teams, the Bengals are the Santa Claus and reindeer of the NFL. Give up two TDs in the final four minutes of a game seemingly in hand? Here ya go! Allow a one win team to score 35 unanswered points? Sure thing! Make a huge comeback only to fumble the ball away when your team has a chance? No problem! But nothing beat Sunday's offsides with the game on Vikings Brett Favre jersey
the line. The entire stadium knew the Saints were not going to run a play on fourth and three inside the 10 yard line with the Bengals winning by three. Well, everyone but Pat Sims. He jumped, the Saints got an easy TD and the Bengals gift wrapped yet another win for another team. The Bengals are in need of a fire sale of the tenth degree. The leader of that sale has to be the face of the franchise, Carson Palmer. Sure his numbers are about league average: 3009 passing yards, 20 TDs, 15 INTs, 60 percent completion percentage, 80.1 QB rating. But much of the yardage has come with the Bengals down by multiple scores. His throwing mechanics and footwork have regressed before our eyes. Palmer has been shaky all season long physically. Mentally he has fallen off his rocker. With the ball at midfield, Palmer completed a 14-yard pass to Brian Leonard with about 16 to 18 seconds left. With a timeout in his pocket, Palmer decided to rush to the line and try and spike the ball. Tick...tick..tick and there are eight seconds left before Palmer finally decides to call a timeout. As the home crowd booed him mercifully, Palmer staggered to the sideline with a blank stare of confusion. The look was Palmer's 2010 season in a nutshell. It was almost as if 4 Brett Favre White jersey
he had finally reached the point that plenty of his predecessors have reached in the past. Akili Smith, Dave Klingler, Jeff Blake, Gus Frerotte, Jon Kitna...the list goes on and on. Palmer has finally been "bungalized" and his face said it all. The time to break up is now. This marriage has been damaged beyond repair. With one of the top five picks, cross your fingers for Andrew Luck and settle for Ryan Mallett. Palmer is a California guy and there are a few teams that can convince their fan bases that Palmer is the answer. The Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers have struggled finding QBs for seemingly forever. It's clear that Palmer needs a change of scenery. The wear and tear that is playing in Cincinnati has finally overtaken him. It's a devastating disease that can be staved off, but sooner or later it engulfs you. Palmer was able to avoid it for longer than most in his position, but it got him. The Bengals can cut Palmer (nobody is paying him $11M next season) and allow him a chance to revive his career Vikings Brett Favre jersey
elsewhere. It's a tough pill to swallow for fans that expected a second consecutive playoff appearance. But in quite possibly the most disappointing season of one of the most disappointing franchises, head's have to roll. Palmer is at the head of the line.

Strawberry Sweed and the rest of Big Ben's giants

If your 6-foot-5, $102 million quarterback asks for a big target in the offseason, you'd better think big. Really big. That’s exactly what the Pittsburgh Steelers did this offseason when QB Ben Roethlisberger requested some sky walkers. When Pittsburgh heads to training camp, Big Ben will have four wide receivers who are 6-3 or taller. But who will stand head and shoulders above the rest to earn a coveted spot on the roster? The player from this bunch who’s most anticipated to not only make the team but also make an impact 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
on the field is Pittsburgh's rookie second-round draft pick, Limas Sweed. The 6-4 Sweed, a former Texas Longhorn, was already one of the program's all-time great receivers going into 2007. But in a preseason practice last year, Sweed hurt a ligament in his wrist. The injury bothered him all season, limiting him to six games; in the end, he racked up 19 catches for 306 yards and three touchdowns. The injury is probably what caused Sweed to slip into Pittsburgh’s hands with the 53rd overall pick. Sweed says the wrist is now healed, though, and he feels like he did when he caught a dozen touchdowns as a junior at Texas. Sweed doesn’t just bring his height to the table. He has exceptional speed and can really leap high to snatch the ball out of the air. Sweed is also very strong for a receiver, which he’ll need when battling defensive backs at a pro level. He also seems to have the right attitude to fit in with the Steelers. "His passion for the game shows through the minute he walks into the building," said head coach Mike Tomlin.Sweed’s teammates have dubbed him “Real Country” because of his rural upbringing, but “Strawberry” may be a better fit. Sweed told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he was once flipped over a railing and fell into a large vat of strawberry ice cream while working at a creamery as a teenager. If he wants to be showered in sweet success as a pro, he’ll have to learn the Steelers’ playbook and take on defenses that will show him things he never saw in Texas. One of the big men who will be giving Sweed a run for his money is second-year receiver Dallas Baker. 2008 could be a boom-or-bust year for the 6-3 Baker, an ex-Florida Gator, and he shouldn’t be ignored in the position battle. The Steelers drafted Baker in the seventh round last year (No. 227 overall), but he didn’t make the 53-man roster as a rookie; rather, he turned heads by regularly making plays on the practice squad. Baker hasn’t missed any practice or conditioning session this offseason. He’s also added five pounds of muscle to his body, and he spent his own time studying film with the Steelers’ receivers coach. Both Tomlin and Roethlisberger have praised the giant steps Baker is making. But he still has a long way to go; after all making plays in practice is a lot different than making plays in the game. And Baker’s lack of high-end speed and quickness will put him at a disadvantage to his faster teammates. As big as Sweed and Baker are, they won’t even be the tallest receivers at training camp. A pair of 6-6 giants will also be trying to turn heads. Matt Trannon will fight for a spot on Pittsburgh's roster after spending 2007 on various practice squads. The former Michigan State Spartan will have to show he can take a hit if wants to make the team. Meanwhile, Micah Rucker -- who was first-team all-Ohio Valley at Eastern Illinois last season -- signed with the Steelers as a rookie free agent, and he brings 4.4 speed. The bottom line is that 11 receivers are entering camp for the Steelers, who could choose to keep up to six on their roster. Three spots are already reserved for established veterans Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and Nate Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
Washington (who made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2005). Many would assume Sweed would nab a fourth spot. That leaves the three other big guys battling for the final two positions with four other receivers. That could all change if Pittsburgh decides to keep three tight ends (speaking of giants, four of the five TEs going to camp are 6-5 or taller). But even if the high hopes are dashed for the rest of these tall targets, you can’t say the Steelers didn’t try to reach for the stars.

San Francisco 49ers Defense Coming of Age vs. Rams

Entering this season, many NFL experts predicted that the San Francisco 49ers' defense would be as bad or worse than last season, and that was saying quite a bit, since the unit ranked last in 2005. In Week 2 of the NFL season, the 49ers set out to prove doubters of their defense wrong. The Rams may no longer be 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey White jersey
"The Greatest Show On Turf," but they still have explosive offensive weapons. Considering the 49ers' sorry state of a defensive backfield, and lack of any semblance of a pass rush, this game should have been of highlight reel-caliber for the Rams. Veteran CB Walt Harris, who joined the 49ers this offseason, had other plans, though, as did DE Bryant Young, DE Marques Douglas, LB Manny Lawson and DB Chad Williams. Harris led the team with seven tackles, and helped to neutralize the high-powered Rams receivers. The others amounted six sacks between them, including two each from Lawson and Williams and a forced fumble from Douglas.Through a combination of improved play and good defensive schemes, the 49ers managed to hold the Rams to only 13 points. It was one of the best performances this team has had on defense in years. What further magnifies the unit's effort is that it was on the field for approximately 10 minutes longer than the Rams' defense. In past years that would have meant a fatigued defense ready for the picking, but not this time around.Despite not holding the ball for long, the 49ers' offense did its share to win the game, too. QB Alex Smith (11-for-22 for 233 yards, one TD), RB Frank Gore (29 carries for 127 yards, one TD), WR Antonio Bryant (four receptions for 131 yards, one TD) and Arnaz Battle (three receptions for 78 yards) all had very good outings. Ultimately, though, San Francisco won this game because of defense - and that is something few would have expected coming into 2006. As the team looks forward to the rest of the season, it can fully expect to be competitive each week, as long as the defense continues to hold up its end of the bargain. The next step for the 49ers will be to 4 Brett Favre White jersey
learn how to win - something that was not evident this past week, despite the victory. San Francisco did not dominate this game like a team that knows how to win would. Learning to pray on an opponent's weakness and to control the game is something the 49ers still have to learn - and it probably will not be something that the team picks up after only a few games. Nevertheless, the 20-13 victory was a big win for a 49ers team that many thought would be in the bottom five of the NFL. San Fran can thank its defense for helping pull off the upset. All the latest 49ers news, game information, and resources- you can also contact Bryan Hersh from there.

San Francisco 49ers "Justin Smiley likely on his way out the door"

Heading into the final season of a four-year contract, San Francisco 49ers right guard Justin Smiley, a second-round pick in the 2004 draft, will likely be playing his final campaign by the Bay. The 6-foot-3, 301-pound lineman from the University of Alabama is due $510,000 this year. That's quite a bargain for 4 Brett Favre White jersey
a player who has started all 16 regular-season games each of the past two years. Smiley, however, is expected to command a huge signing bonus as a free agent. You can't really blame him for wanting to get paid considering the massive contracts awarded this offseason to guards Derrick Dockery (Buffalo Bills), Eric Steinbach (Cleveland) and Kris Dielman (San Diego), none of whom have made a Pro Bowl. Dockery is guaranteed $18 million, and Steinbach and Dielman are guaranteed $17 million. So, should the 49ers pony up the dough to keep Smiley in town?Absolutely not.Smiley is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and is not expected to practice until training camp in late July. The injury could not have come at a worse time for Smiley, as his attempt to secure a long-term deal from the team has been hampered.Compounding the situation has been the stellar play of guard David Baas in organized team activities. The former Michigan Wolverine has yet to establish himself as a starter on the line, but he seems to finally be showing the promise that made him the 33rd overall pick in the 2005 draft. Baas is under contract through 2009 and is scheduled to earn $435,000 this year. Joining Baas as a potential replacement for Smiley is fellow 2005 draftee Adam Snyder, a third-round pick out of the University of Oregon. In college, Snyder played every line position except center. His versatility was a major factor in the 49ers' decision to sign him to a four-year extension worth $10.4 million. During OTAs, Snyder lined up at guard. The fact that Baas and Snyder are both locked up and full of potential provides the 49ers flexibility with the Smiley situation. San Francisco does not have to give in and pay a guard a ridiculous amount of Steelers 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
money like the Bills, Browns and Chargers did. Instead, the Niners can focus on adding a playmaker at wideout or an heir apparent to future Hall of Fame defensive lineman Bryant Young in free agency next year. Smiley provided the 49ers solid service for three seasons and will probably do the same this year. Next March, however, Niners fans should expect him to cash in elsewhere.

Team earns two seed, two easy games with Oakland win

Down by a point in the fourth quarter to a punchline opponent that let their rookie quarterback see action for the first time doesn't sound like a typical in-game moment for the Colts. Of course, being in a situation where the team could also still clinch a weekend off during the playoffs in the next two games would reduce the sense of urgency for any franchise.Even knowing that, had they lost Sunday, there would be potential occasions to assert themselves as the conference's regular season runner-up in the weeks ahead, the Colts ended any Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
drama, emerging victorious in a surprisingly tight contest with an Oakland team that didn't play like it was thinking about its 4-9 record. In one of those "It's even more amazing that they did it in spite of. . ." moments, Indianapolis triumphed without getting its running attack going. Joseph Addai only totaled 44 rushing yards on 15 attempts, while Kenton Keith kicked in 11 from a meager three carries. Add in the two attempts for 3 yards by someone listed in the box score named "P. Manning," and the Colts only trampled for 58 yards on the ground. That works out to 2.9 per carry, and that obviously means those involved in the passing game picked up the slack. But even more shocking in victory than the paltry rushing accumulation was who didn't have a fantastic day while the runners sputtered. Namely, Dallas Clark, often Manning's favorite target this season, caught only a single pass for 9 yards.Ben Utecht, the Colts' second-best receiving tight end, no knock on a player who's behind Clark on the depth chart, somewhat made up for his teammate's unusually low output with three catches of his own for 42 yards. Still, that's a fairly minor combination of gains from a position that has typically been productive this season.Filling the void was wideout Anthony Gonzalez, as his seven catches for 86 yards included the game-winning touchdown with just under five minutes remaining. Rookie receivers on even bad-to-mediocre teams often must patiently wait to be incorporated into the offense, but Gonzalez has evolved from a valuable contributor to the oft-primary weapon on an elite squad through a combination of necessity and talent.Gonzalez's productivity is especially admirable on a day when the offense never fully clicked. Still, his veteran counterpart had a nice performance: For a change, Reggie Wayne complemented the first-year receiver instead of the other way around, as he managed a respectable four catches for 69 yards. The rarely used Devin Aromashodu chipped in, too, tripling his reception total for the season to three as he caught two balls, picking up 37 yards. In the end, talented people unconcerned with individual numbers or glory, as usual, prevailed.Even then, selflessness wasn't all that led to this win: It took a special teams touchdown and the fortitude to overcome a blown lead in the final quarter, but the Colts finished an important task after an overall uninspiring performance. Manning did pass for 276 yards, but his touchdown strike to Gonzalez was the only one he managed. Nothing stood out as particularly impressive for them, except, of course, the final score.Figuring out a way to prevail, though, is always a sign of a powerful team. Plus, with their playoff slot 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
determined and without having to concern themselves over the pursuit of a perfect regular season, the Colts can use the pair of remaining December games to rest tired or injured regulars, get experience for crucial reserves, and practice whatever they desire during live action. The current situation is a nice consolation prize Indianapolis won in a surprisingly challenging outing in Oakland.

Tony Dungy "As always, Tony Dungy will choose his path on his terms"

Football fans who have never played nor coached are always baffled when those in the game walk away with their abilities still intact. How could somebody abandon a career in an immensely popular, lucrative sport without being forced to leave? Of course, we all see the glory they receive for 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
being paid riches to compete in the NFL while rarely considering dealing with the agony players experience trying to get up off a mattress at Monday's daybreak or the insanely overwhelming stress and time obligations faced by coaches.Every desirable career has tradeoffs like these, but there's a time when the costs outweigh the benefits for some. Tony Dungy is maybe about to retire, or maybe not, but it's important to maintain the perspective that this is his decision to make. It's amazingly easy for those on the outside to forget, but what impact does the game have on his life and not the other way around? The most critical factor may be that, unlike, say, Tampa Bay replacement Jon Gruden, Dungy seems to have broader interests than the game. Gruden's gung-ho intensity and lunatic eyes are a perfect contrast to Dungy's Mister-Rogers-on-Zoloft voice and quiet dignity. Both are somehow admirable in their own respective ways without even comparing their careers, which in itself is a testament to the wildly diverse nature of a game that rewards brute force as much as it does acrobatic slipperiness. But in this case, the greater point is that the coach who embodies tranquil poise can walk away if he wishes with a fantastic track record intact. To be fair, Dungy's 9-9 postseason record does stand in sharp contrast to his 127-65 regular-season coaching mark. There are the same questions about him that hover around Peyton Manning, namely whether each is fiery enough to do more than be largely renowned for September-to-December feats rather than consistent playoff triumph. It is legitimate to wonder if one Super Bowl title for this Indianapolis team is enough, but, at the same time, the key is to remember that getting even that one championship is a remarkable accomplishment. More significantly, it seems as if Dungy's quality of life would have remained the same even if he had never hoisted the Lombardi Trophy as a coach.Despite that, it's not that the title was unwelcome to him after a life spent in the game. At 52, Dungy has been either playing or coaching football for a living since his days as a safety for Pittsburgh in 1977; he also won a championship with them the next season. After a third season as a player with the 49ers and one year coaching the defensive backs at the University of Minnesota, the same college where he was a school-record-setting quarterback, he entered the NFL coaching ranks in 1981 at the same position for the Steelers and has been in the pro game ever since. That's a long time to work in any field, a fact that's markedly true when one considers Dungy's outside activities extend beyond the likes of coin collecting, bird watching, and, especially, the more base and depraved social pursuits enjoyed by many current players. There might not be a more civic-minded individual in professional sports than Dungy; one could imagine him being granted the floor at a PTA meeting or leading an after-school prayer fellowship in a high school cafeteria just as easily as it is to visualize him patrolling the RCA Dome sidelines. He'll do something else interesting with his life if he does move on, and, the passion football stirs aside, Dungy would likely find it more vitally rewarding than what he's doing now. The fans who don't get that are the same ones who would quit their jobs and never do anything again the moment they acquired a seven-figure amount through lottery, inheritance, lawsuit, or the like. If Dungy is indeed thinking of leaving the game, it's not to loaf, fatten up, and improve his PlayStation skills, but instead to devote time toward faith and community.Dungy could also be enticed by the prospect of Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
spending time with his family, a reason often cited for coaching "resignations" that in this case would be true. The fact his family resides in Tampa along with the impact of the tragedy they endured just over two years ago with his son's passing both make the prospect of time with his relations more crucially appealing. It would be a shame for the league to lose both a talented coach and a thoroughly respectable gentleman at once. But Tony Dungy has every right to move along whether or not he actually does so, as he's under no obligation to continue coaching simply because he's ineligible to receive Social Security benefits.

Raiders beef up line, sign Wade

The regeneration continues in land, as yesterday the black-and-silver outdid the Buccaneers, the only franchise as freewheelin’ and dealin’ this off-season, by inking center John Wade. With ten NFL seasons under his belt with Tampa Bay and the Jacksonville Jaguars, Wade figures to get the starting 10 Santonio Holmes black jersey
spot in 2008. Wade was originally drafted by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 1998 draft. Going into camp expected to be a marginal player, Wade first got into the game in week 12; interestingly, Wade’s very first career start was in the AFC Wild Card game against New England. After his rookie year, Wade started 105 of a possible 144 games and six times played the entire 16-game slate; in his five-year career with Tampa Bay, he started all but eight games when placed on IR in 2004.This durability, Wade’s strength, makes him an ideal answer to the Raiders’ recent problems at center. Jeremy Newberry started last season, actually managing to suit up for 14 games after three consecutive seasons mostly on injured reserve in San Francisco. Clearly, Al Davis (no relation) and co. prefer some stability to waiting for the other knee to drop. The Wade signing would appear to spell the end of Newberry’s short time in Oakland, and most reckon Wade’s main competition at center to be Jake Grove. Grove also has injury issues, having problems with a shoulder in summer 2006; he saw action with the Raiders in only seven games in 2007.Though no front-page headliner, Wade’s entry onto the Raider roster surely represents another positive move for a team with 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
a relative lack of draft picks. After giving up a whopping 115 sacks the past two seasons, bringing Wade and Kwame Harris aboard should augment an already improved offensive line. Now draft Chris Long...Snapping it cleanly throughout the year at . (0)

Ranking the new guys, from Akbar to Gibril

If the 2008 offseason hasn’t already been hijacked by the attention-grabbing , 78-year-old team owner Al Davis will do all he can to make sure of that this weekend.Chris Long in a silver and black No. 75 jersey would be quite the headline.Up to this point in the offseason, however, Oakland has already added nine new faces to its roster, in addition to keeping some old faces -- Tommy Kelly, Justin Fargas and Nnamdi Asomugha, just to name a few. With the NFL draft a few days ahead -- meaning another five new faces -- here’s how the 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
first nine additions rank according to on-the-field importance.9. Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, DE, signed from Miami: Gbaja-Biamila has spent 27 games with the Raiders in the past (from ‘03 to ‘04). That number may stay at 27. The 28-year-old will likely get cut before the season. If not, look for him on special teams.8. William Joseph, DT, signed from New York Giants: Sure, Joseph could become the Derrick Burgess of the Raiders’ defensive tackle lineup. After all, he was a first-round pick in 2003. But the 308-pounder sat out all last season, and hasn’t put up the numbers anyone expected in the four years he was on the field. The 28-year-old has never recorded more than two sacks or 25 tackles in a single season.7. John Wade, C, signed from Tampa Bay: The signing of the 33-year-old Wade indicates the likely departure of veteran center Jeremy Newberry. If and when Newberry officially leaves, this signing will certainly become more significant. Only the 28-year-old Jake Grove and second-year lineman Chris Morris could then be considered viable starters at the center spot, neither of whom Oakland can afford to have snapping the ball to an inexperienced JaMarcus Russell.6. Kalimba Edwards, DE, signed from Detroit: The former second-rounder hasn’t worn any other jersey in the NFL outside of a Detroit Lions’ one. So if the six years spent in Detroit hasn’t rubbed off on him too much, Oakland may have found a steal here. The 265-pound end has played in 87 career games with 160 tackles and 26 sacks, with a career-high seven QB takedowns in 2005. Burgess is searching for a sidekick, and Edwards could become it.5. Drew Carter, WR, signed from Carolina: After a painful half-year with Mike Williams taking over the slot duties in 2007, Oakland wanted to make sure a similar episode didn’t occur in ‘08. Williams had seven catches in six games with the Raiders last season, which isn’t so surprising, considering he had eight receptions in all of 2006. Carter, though, put up a career year with Carolina last season, grabbing 38 balls for 517 yards and four TDs. At 6-foot-3, he’ll be a nice outlet for Russell to look to next season.4. DeAngelo Hall, CB, trade from Atlanta: If the Raiders hadn’t spent four first-day picks on defensive backs over the past four years, the addition of Hall would look better on paper. Still, bringing the 200-pounder to Oakland completes perhaps the best cornerback lineup in the NFL. Fabian Washington and Stanford Routt -- the team’s two backup CBs -- would start on many NFL rosters. Instead, Asomugha and Hall -- two Pro Bowlers -- will be the top guys in Oakland next year.3. Kwame Harris, OT, signed from San Francisco: If Russell doesn’t want to spend his first full year as a starter on the run, he’d better hope for a reliable left tackle. With longtime Raider Barry Sims out the door, however, Oakland has a major hole to fill, and the 26-year-old Harris is the top option. At this point, in fact, he may be the only option. The former first-round pick has started in 44 games over the past five years, and the Raiders will likely need another 16 of those in 2008.2. Javon Walker, WR, signed from Denver: With Jerry Porter’s departure and a very limited pool of free-agent wide receivers to work with this offseason, Oakland executed a major deal by locking Walker up long term. The 6-3 pass catcher will instantly become the Raiders’ No. 1 wide receiver, hopefully making both Russell’s and fellow WR Ronald Curry’s job a bit easier. The Raiders haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver on the roster since Randy Moss left; this time, Al Davis is hoping things turn out a little better, though.1. Gibril Wilson, S, signed from N.Y. 10 Santonio Holmes White jersey
Giants: Oakland’s first signing of the offseason may turn out to be the best. The 26-year-old safety, who earned a Super Bowl ring with the Giants last season, will be as much of an asset to the team’s pass defense as to the run ‘D’. The 209-pounder, with 294 solo tackles in four years, has more than any other safety in that 64-game span. In total, Wilson has registered 360 career tackles, six sacks, 19 passes defensed and 11 interceptions. He’s also started in every game but one that he’s played in, and is coming off a career-high four-interception season in 2007. DeAngelo Hall will dominate in jersey sales, but it’ll be Wilson whose jersey shows up most on Sundays.Anthony Carroll can be contacted at (16)

Al Davis Mike Shanahan

According to owner Al Davis, the two Denver Broncos' Super Bowl victories in 1997 and 1998 should have asterisks placed beside them. He has previously been critical of the way the Broncos and San Francisco 49ers manipulated the 6 Sanchez Purple AFL50th jersey
salary cap during their championship runs in the 90's.There is still lingering resentment over the quick dismissal Davis gave Shanahan early in the 1989 season after only 20 games at the helm of the Raiders. Aside from the two Super Bowl wins, nothing has given Shanahan more pleasure in his NFL coaching career than beating his former boss, and he's done it plenty of late. He has compiled a 16-5 record all-time against Oakland, including another season sweep in 2005.Shanahan has 114 wins, compared to just 62 losses since accepting the head coaching job in Denver, though he will be shooting for his first playoff win since John Elway retired when his Broncos meet the New England Patriots this weekend. In his tele-conference last week, Davis added that Shanahan was a young guy that nobody knew much about, and after interviewing many people in 1988, he unfortunately hired him. Davis said after nearly a year and a half, the players revolted against Shanahan, so he had to let him go. Davis ended 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
up bringing in Art Shell, who coached there until being fired after the 1994 season, compiling a 54-38 record. Shell has been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace recently fired coach Norv Turner. Shanahan claims that Davis still owes him money from his dismissal, and Davis doesn't plan to pay. The sweetest "payback" for the Denver coach has come in the form of defeating the on a regular basis.

Norv Turner Sebastian Janikowski

Another Sunday, another winnable game, another disappointing loss. The dropped to double-digit losses against the Browns at home on Sunday, losing 7-9. The Oakland defense held the Browns' offense to no touchdowns on the day, 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
but it wasn't enough. Norv Turner showed once again his inability to drive offensive talent and efficiently coordinate his team.Browns' kicker Phil Dawson booted the ' season deeper into a hole with three field goals-respectively: 44 yards, 24 yards, and a game-winning 37-yarder. Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski did much of the same, as he missed a 51-yard field goal early in the second quarter and had a 46-yard attempt blocked in the fourth quarter. Turner's choice to attempt the 46-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter was yet another failed coaching decision that fans have become accustomed to over the last two years. Let's consider the circumstances:1. Sebastian Janikowski is 19/27 kicking on the season, and only 60% from 40-49 yards. Add these struggles with slippery field conditions, and the equation shouldn't be a very difficult one to solve. 2. Your team's punter is statistically the best punter in the history of the National Football League. Shane Lechler has 134 career punts inside the 20-yard line, 20 of these punts came this season, and he has only four touchbacks on the year.3. Your opponents have yet to score a touchdown in a game that has just over three minutes remaining and are led by a winless rookie quarterback. The probability of Sebastian Janikowski missing his field goal is higher than Charlie Frye taking his team from inside the twenty-yard line down to field goal range in under three minutes.I suppose if Sebastian Janikowski did make his fourth quarter attempt, the Dallas Cowboys jersey
likelihood of the Browns scoring a game-winning touchdown would have been exceptionally low. However, if that were the case, it still wouldn't have been a good coaching decision. Instead, you would have just read an article about Rob Ryan and the remarkable performance of the Oakland defense.Any comments on this article?
